TREATY MAH... TREATY NOW!!!
YOTHU YINDI
After the untimely death of the band's lead singer, Dr M. Yunupingu Yothu Yindi went into hiatus. The 25th anniversary of Yothu Yindi’s Treaty was in 2017 and the song continues to raise awareness for the need for a treaty with Australia’s First Nations people. Yothu Yindi released their timeless hit in 1991 as a protest against a broken promise by the hypocritical Hawke Government.
Hitting the road in 2022 the latest incarnation of Yothu Yindi will be performing their Yolngu style mujik at festivals, including the Treaty Day Out and the National Folk Festival.
Original members include songman/dancer Wityana Marika, bassist Stu Kellaway, Ben Hakalitz on drums, keyboard wizard Matt Cunliffe and dancer Mangatjay, with young guns Malngay Yunupingu and Rrawun Maymuru (East Journey) on lead vocals,.
TREATY DAY OUT...
Yothu Yindi will be a major drawcard at the Treaty Day Out in Shepparton on Sat 26th February.
Treaty is our opportunity to tackle the racist legacies of invasion and create a better future together as equals.
As the democratic body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria, the First People’s Assembly of Victoria is currently developing a framework and the ground-rules that will enable Traditional Owners of Country to negotiate Treaty with the Victorian Government.
If you’re Mob, enrol with us to show your support and have your say about the next steps on the journey to Treaty.
If you’re an ally, walk with us by joining Team Treaty for updates.
When it comes to Treaty, nothing is off the table – so we need to think big and push hard! Whether your family has been here for 5 years or 50,000 years, Treaty will help make Victoria a fairer place for everyone and ensure us Aboriginal people always have the freedom and power to make the decisions that affect our communities, our culture and our Country.

Co-Chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, and proud Nira illim bulluk man of the Taungurung nation, Marcus Stewart, said it was a time to celebrate.
“What a line up! From established musical heroes to cutting-edge new talent, the day will have something for everyone. We’re really excited to be back out in community and celebrating our culture and music again."
